Vuryo Adopt!!!!

2 min read
HEY GUYS! I just wanted to make a journal to spread awareness about a new Closed Species made by nordskov!!!!! These beautiful creatures are called Vuryo's, and the full information on them can be found in her journal here:

NOT ONLY THAT but she just posted her first ever Vuryo adopt, which is currently available to buy through auction that you can find here:

[CLOSED] Vuryo Auction by nordskov

Everyone please take a look, because this species is absolutely STUNNING, and this artist worked incredibly hard to create something gorgeous!!! If I knew I would use him I would probably AB him myself, but I wouldn't know what to do with him, so I can only hope he finds a good home that will treat him with the love he deserves <3 Take a look! And if you can't afford him, help this artist out by spreading the word about her Closed Species and her current auction!!!! Help find a home for this Vuryo!

【Fears】» Being forgotten or left behind, failing those he cares about, falling in love, dying alone.

【Dreams】» He is very passionate about language and culture and wishes to one day become fluent in every known language there is (although it's a very unrealistic goal). I wanna be a bit more active on DeviantArt, but since I'm not really an artist there isn't much I can do in terms of posts, so instead I'm just going to fawn over my OC's and allow other people to do the same! Admittedly a bit of shameless promotion on my part, for my books as well as the artists whom I've commissioned to draw art of this character. So yea, go read my books and spend money on these artists because they deserve it. I'll probably do OC features like this for a few of my favorite children, it's a good way to develop them first of all, and it's fun in general to introduce people to characters I've spent so long developing. Enjoy!

Artist Criteria

13 min read
I commission a lot of artists (wow we had no idea) and I've had a few people note me first asking if I wanted commissions. That kind of thing, admittedly, bugs me, but at the same time it kind of makes sense that people who want to make money for their art would have to go as far as to contact commissioners FIRST, because they're not getting the recognition or finance that they need to SURVIVE. Every time I see an artist with emergency commissions open, or if they note me first, I get all sad and empathetic and want to commission them until they have the recognition and money they need, because drawing is freaking hard and they deserve the appreciation for it.

Unfortunately I'm not rich, and I can't be a good Samaritan and give ALL my money away (even if I get amazing art in exchange). There are things that I look for specifically when commissioning an artist, and sometimes those criteria aren't met, so when artists note me and their art doesn't interest me, I probably won't commission them. But I still feel all bad about it. So this journal is to list out my personal criteria that needs to be met when looking for an artist, and later I might make another journal and post a kind of recognition thing for artists who have contacted me asking if I wanted to commission them. Just because I didn't, doesn't mean others won't.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Criteria:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1:
Updated Commission Journal
When I'm commissioning someone, I like to see what their art looks like NOW, not five years ago when they originally drew the art. It would be an easy task for me to just pop over to their gallery, and if I'm already interested in the art and the artist, then that's normally what I do, is go through their gallery, but if I'm rushing and just scanning over things, I like to know the art is recent, otherwise it might not catch my eye. Likewise, if you have an old example but no longer draw in that style anymore, but that's what I want, it puts a damper on things.

2. Artist Must Take PayPal
I don't do the DeviantArt point system. Seems weird and overly complicated to me, so I prefer to stick with cash. I kind of figure unless the artist is looking to get Core membership, they would also prefer actual money as apposed to points. That's just my personal preference though.

3: Prices Must Include the PayPal Fee

This is more of a personal pet peeve of mine, and irritates me though I have no idea why. I have no qualms about paying the PayPal fee, the artist works incredibly hard to provide quality work, so they deserve 100% of the payment. It would be so infuriating if you charged $20 and PayPal only gave you $15. I'm fine paying the fee, and normally I pay a tip just to be sure the fee is fully paid, but when I'm looking for an artist, and I see "YOU have to pay the fee" then I automatically don't want to. I think it's because I'm a naturally stubborn person, when someone tells me to do something, I want to flip them off. I'm trying to fix that character trait I swear. Anyway, I don't like it when the commission journal states that I have to pay the fee. I prefer it when the fee is included in the price (additionally I learned that it's against PayPal rules to make the commissioner pay the fee, your account could be suspended if they find out. So for your own sake it would probably be best to add the fee into the original price of the art).

4: The Artists Do's and Don'ts
On an artists commission journal, I look for the do's and don'ts, or what the artists can and can't draw. If they aren't comfortable drawing satanic characters/symbols, I want to know. If they aren't skilled at drawing old people, I want to know. If they don't draw NSFW or same sex couples, I want to know. I don't want to offend anyone by ordering a certain piece of art that the artist either can't draw due to their skills still developing, or due to personal belief, morals, and preference. All my OC characters that I commission art from are gay or on the spectrum, so I don't want an artist to draw them if they wouldn't be comfortable with that. Even if I'm commissioning a singular character, I still ask "Is it okay if this character is in a same sex relationship"? If an artist doesn't have a Do and Don't list, I get uncomfortable and nervous, because I won't know their limit or what might offend them. This is very important. For me to commission an artist, THEY MUST HAVE A DO AND DON'T LIST.

5: Male Characters
I've noticed on DeviantArt, the majority of artists only draw female characters. Even the male artists only draw girls with big boobs and wide hips. In fact a lot of amazing artists that I want to commission, I have not commissioned, because they only draw girls. I have no female OC's. Okay I have one, but I don't have any references for her yet, and I don't care about her enough to get art for her (I'm so mean). I care way more about my male characters, so when looking for an artist, I look for their capability or preference towards male characters. If they say they only draw girls, I sigh and fly away. If they say they only draw loli or shouta boys, ey that still counts. I don't mind if the boys are feminine because most my male characters are kind of feminine, but if the artist only draws girls, I'm immediately out.

6: NSFW
Don't worry guys, I am above the age of 18, I have every right and legality to commission nude art. Because porn is still art (accept real porn, sex is gross, ugh). It isn't a major deal-breaker if the artist doesn't work with NSFW pieces, most of the time I just want fluffy couple art or one character at a time, but sometimes, rare though it may be, I really want to see some steam on my commission. I'm only human, you can't blame me, and when the commission journal says the artist accepts NSFW art, while I may not jump on it immediately, it makes me thrilled that the option is there for when I'm in the mood to see my characters gettin' cozy~ Also don't worry, every NSFW art piece I've gotten, the characters involved are above the age of eighteen and either in a committed relationship or already married. Although that might be a pet peeve of mine. When an artist offers NSFW art for all ages, I'm wary, but if they say "NSFW ART ONLY FOR 18+" I go ah yes, a decent human being.

7: Yaoi/MxM
This ties back to the fact I only have male characters, and the fact all of them are either gay, demisexual, bisexual, pansexual, or somewhere along the homosexual spectrum (even my female OC's that I write about are lesbian or bisexual). Normally when I get couple art, it depicts two of my boys romantically, so when looking for an artist to do couple work, I look for their preference on if they're comfortable or capable of drawing two men in romantic situations. I won't argue with preference, maybe they just aren't comfortable with it, maybe they don't know how to draw it correctly, I'm not going to claim everyone like that is homophobic, because that might not be the case, but I really prefer commissioning couple pieces when I know for sure they're okay with it (or even better if they're as obsessed with it as I am because them we can squeal about it together). Now if the artist says "I won't draw yaoi but I'll draw two guys as friends" then that's fine, but still makes me wary. I mean? Where's the line between friends and lovers? Am I allowed to use this "friend" art as reference for when I get NSFW art, or would that make the artist mad? Can I take the art depicting them as "friends" and tell people they're both gay and married? It's a very blurred line and it makes me anxious because the last thing I want to do is offend the artist.

8: Payment

So a lot of artists have their preferences on how to go about payment. Some prefer direct deposit, some prefer sending an invoice, and I really don't care which one is chosen because I don't mind as long as they get their money. My issue is timing. I like sending the money immediately, that way I don't have to worry about it later, although I do admit that with artists I've never worked with before, it makes me a tad uncomfortable. Because what if they take my money and just never give me my art, right? Especially if I've paid a LOT of money. Something like $15 isn't a big deal, but $25 and above really gets me worried. Even so I like paying beforehand. Either that, or I'm cool with paying once the sketch has been shown to me. I don't like paying after the picture is finished. Not because I won't pay, but because I'm worried the artist is too lax and has been cheated before, which is just unfair to them. I prefer an artists who has me pay beforehand or after the sketch is shown. Idk why.

9: Price
This is a very controversial subject for artists on DA. How much they charge for their art, how much they think their art is worth. It's sad. Some artists only charge like $10 for a chibi, when their art is clearly worth at least $30, and then there are artists who charge $50 for chibis when their work, to me, seems like it's only worth $20 because of quality alone. Some artists charge less to get more customers, but then there are artists who charge something like $200 per couple illustration who have a list of 50 on their waiting list. It's just too controversial and annoying. Artists decide what their own art is worth, fine, but the artists who charge $5 for a chibi when their art is out of this world? I bought a headshot that was only $30 and it pissed me off because it was worth, in my opinion, at least $50, because of the sheer quality and style that it was done in. This artist brutally undervalued himself and it physically hurt me (so I tipped him an extra $10 but never mind that). I've also been through something where I paid $115 for a couple that turned out looking like blurry mush. It looked like it was rushed, the colors were all wrong, and the line work was messy like chicken scratch. Compared to the examples on the commission journal, what I bought looked like it was done by a first grader. It's like the artist got the money and went "lol I don't even like these characters so I'm going to treat them like shit" and that fucking pisses me off. I've also had an artist charge me around $75, which was cool with me, because the examples of their work was phenomenal. Then they send me my finished piece and it looks like they got bored and lazy and just "wanted it done already". That's not professional at all. The good artists undervalue themselves, the less than exemplary artists OVERvalue themselves and are super high and mighty like "I can do no wrong, don't give me critiques and only good feedback because this is the best thing ever" when it's clear that they could use some more practice. So for this, I really don't mind how much something costs, as long as the artist is polite and professional. I won't question price, even if it's $50 per chibi, unless that artist is a little shit. Normally if I think something is undervalued, I just tip the artist the difference for what I think they really deserve, and if the artist overvalues themselves, or I think they overvalue themselves, I don't tip at all, and I wait to see what they send me. Like I said, it's controversial, but I could make a whole new journal on artists who brutally undervalue their own work (and if someone wants to see that journal, just comment, cuz I'll do it).

10: Contact
Over a year ago I commissioned a picture worth $25, and after payment was sent, all contact ceased (also I didn't get my art). Contact is very important, and a very big criteria for artists I'm working with. Constant contact isn't necessary, I don't need to know what you're doing every hour of every day, but if the picture is going to take you over three months to complete, I would either like some periodic, monthly at the least, updates, or I would like the ability to contact you without problem. I'm a really anxious person, I have social anxiety and a mild panic disorder, as well as a bunch of other shit that's too complicated to explain, so I almost never ask for updates, because I get scared. Even if all I send is "how's it going" I get scared that the artist is going to flip out on me and yell or something, twist everything to make me feel like I did something wrong, so I almost never note asking for updates. I'm a pretty patient person, so normally I don't mind waiting (gives me something to look forward to, and excuse to live, whatever), but if I don't hear or see any progress in three months? I get a bit testy. If I can contact the artist and they respond withing the day, I feel better, and after three months, I'm going to be expecting the artist to send me a sketch WIP at the least.

11: To-Do Lists

I absolutely love when artists I commission have to-do lists either on their profile or in a journal that they update periodically. I like seeing when my turn is coming up, and I like being able to look and see how much workload the artists has. If I'm thinking of commissioning but they have a super long waiting list, I might not commission, but if the to-do list is shorter I'll jump on it. A) because I like getting art somewhat quickly, and B) it means the artist isn't overworking themselves, which isn't fun for them at all. They should enjoy what they do, it shouldn't be a chore. Even if they want money, they shouldn't be irresponsible and have 100+ people on their to-do list. If I see that, I yeet (that's the first time I've ever used the word yeet, kids these days are weird).

I've commissioned a lot of wonderful artists since joining this sight, but I have to admit some people I enjoyed working with more than others. I guess I can be kind of picky about who I commission, I like finding artists that I can return to multiple times, because it's pretty nerve wrecking trying to find good and professional artists from scratch. You don't know each other so the trust is a little strained. Will the commissioner pay the full price, will the artist even finish the picture. It's pretty stressful.

Because of that, I've ended up making a mental list of artists I love enough to return to multiple times for a number of reasons: they're professional, they're polite, their art is amazing, they finish in a decent amount of time (or I like them enough to wait as long as they need), etc. Artists that I enjoy working with both because of their art as well as their personality. I really love that I can support freelance artists, because as an author I know how hard it is to make money doing what you really love, and when the artist is an utter sweetheart, I just want them to take all my money because they deserve only good things.

So I'm going to list my top artists that I've commissioned, the artists that I recommend everyone take a look at and consider commissioning, because they're all precious angels who are honestly too good for this world (and if you hurt any of them I will not hesitate to stab a bitch *can I curse on DA?* :blankleshank:).

Favorite Artists (not in any particular order):

Yup. Those are my favorite artists, artists that I have commissioned more than once, and artists I want to commission again. I'd be commissioning them constantly, one request after the other, but I don't want to be annoying and make them think I'm weird. I swear I'm not a creep I just love these artists and think they deserve more recognition for their talent and their genuine professionalism and kindness

The majority of these artists have currently open commissions, so if you've been searching for some amazing people to buy art from, I recommend these artists the most. Just remember to be polite and to treat them with the respect they deserve. They've taken time out of their lives and out of their free time to draw YOUR characters for you. They deserve respect, and they deserve at least two paragraphs of feedback on the finished piece (is that too extensive?). If you can afford it, remember to tip them! It's the polite thing to do.

This was fun to write out! I hope people can find some amazing artists through me! Thanks for reading!
